Choosing the Best Acne Medication for You

What’s the best acne medication? That depends on your condition. If you have moderate to severe acne with pimples deep in the skin, it is unlikely that topical medications will be effective for you. On the other hand, if you have only mild acne and rarely get pimples, then a topical medication may be the best acne medication for you.

Best Acne Medication: Light Acne

Try a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel available over the counter at drugstores and supermarkets. The best news for you is that you don’t need prescription strength. In fact, you should never use anything stronger than 2.5% because it will just irritate your skin. Clinical studies have shown that stronger is not better in this case. Salicylic acid creams can be used at the same time to increase the penetration of benzoyl peroxide into your pores.

Best Acne Medication: Moderate to severe acne

In my experience, topical treatments are not the best acne medication for sufferers of moderate to severe acne. In the past, dermatologists prescribed topical and oral antibiotics to try to kill the bacteria that they blamed for causing acne. Today, we know that bacteria alone does not cause acne. Indeed, acne is a complex condition that involves your androgen (male) hormone levels. Antibiotics, whether topical or oral, have no effect on this underlying cause. Antibiotic use is also on the wane because of the fear of producing antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Best Acne Medication: Accutane and Holistic Treatments

The best acne medications for moderate to severe acne are Accutane and the holistic treatments. Accutane is an acne miracle drug but it should only be used as a last resort due to its severe side effects. If you have moderate to severe acne, Accutane is a good choice if you don’t respond to anything else. Before trying Accutane, I recommend trying out one of the holistic alternative treatments (ACNE NO MORE). By adjusting your diet and following one of these systems, you can rebalance your hormones and clear your acne in less time than you can with Accutane. Since Accutane is very expensive and has side effects (it has recently been removed from the US market) I can’t recommend it as the best acne medication. Instead, I recommend trying the holistic alternatives (ACNE NO MORE) if you are looking for the best acne medication.
