“The Best Way to Get Rid of Acne”

The best way to get rid of acne is the Acne No More system, by nutritionist Mike Walden. Acne No More works by correcting the hormone imbalance that causes acne. In spite of what you may have heard, acne is not caused by poor hygiene, it is caused by Androgen hormones in your blood. That’s why topical treatments and antibiotics are not effective. In this post I will go over the popular treatment options that you might be considering, and give you the good and bad points of each one. As I said at the top, in my opinion the best way to get rid of acne is Acne No More, and I have written an extensive review which explains why: Click Here to Read My Review of Acne No More. Also, at the bottom of the page I have a form which you can fill out to receive my free acne treatments mini-course which has lots of great, free info on how to properly care for your skin and make sure you avoid the mistakes that can make your acne worse. It’s spam free, so make sure you sign up.

Proper Skin Care

You can’t get rid of acne by washing your face properly, but you can make it worse because harsh soaps can irritate and inflame your acne. Anything that irritates your skin must be avoided and that includes exfoliating, loofahs, picking squeezing and scratching. Make sure you don’t wash too often (more than twice per day) and don’t use anything but the mildest soap or cleanser. Try Cetaphil instead of soap. Many people have cleared up mild acne simply by switching to Cetaphil. It really is the best cleanser I have found. Here is a good deal I found on a two-pack of Cetaphil on Amazon: click here to see Cetaphil at Amazon . Using lukewarm water, gently apply the cleaner with two fingers in a circular motion. Rinse and pat dry gently with a soft clean cotton towel. That’s it. No more than twice per day, please. You can save your money and not buy medicated cleansers and that kind of thing. They are pretty much useless. Just remember - cleaning your skin properly properly won’t get rid of your acne, but if you don’t wash it properly, you will likely make it worse.  Again, acne is caused by hormones, not dirt.

Antibiotics

Doctors used to prescribe antibiotics all the time to treat acne. The problem is that killing bacteria only prevents acne from getting worse, but it doesn’t prevent acne in the first place. Acne is caused by a complex process involving your androgen hormones and how your body deals with androgen hormones. This is largely determined by genetics. If your mom and dad had acne, chances are you will too. Antibiotics don’t do anything to your hormones. They are also expensive, require doctor visits (more money) and are inconvenient to take. The worst strike against antibiotics is that they promote antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In my own case, I took various antibiotics for years and suffered stomach issues as a result. What a waste of time and effort! It’s a shame that many doctors still sprescribe them for acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is the “active ingredient” in 90% of acne medications, including expensive ones like ProActive. It supposedly works by killing the P.Acnes bacteria on your skin as well as unblocking clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide has been the “gold standard” of acne treatments for a very long time but it is based on a false understanding of what causes acne in the first place, which is why it does not work for most people. The bacteria that BP targets does not cause acne, but it can infect and inflame pimples and make acne appear worse.  Benzoyl peroxide can help if you have very mild acne but if you stop using it, your acne will return. Once you start you can’t stop. I don’t recommend BP because it tends to irritate skin (it was originally prescribed because of it’s “peeling” effects) and inflame acne and it doesn’t, of course, treat the hormonal cause of acne. Clinical studies have shown that 2.5% concentrations are just as effective as 5-10% solutions so if you feel you want to try benzoyl peroxide, skip the expensive treatments and prescription strengths and just buy cheap 2.5% gels over the counter at your drug store.

Hormonal Treatments

Women who can take the birth control pill (Yasmin is the best choice) might find that it helps to control their breakouts, especially their “once a month” breakouts. There are other treatments for women including spironolactone that you can talk to your doctor about. Hormonal treatments can be very effective. You can talk to (and pay) your doctor if you think they are right for you. They work, because, like the name says, hormonal treatments reduce the production of androgen hormones by the ovaries. If you are a man, you cannot get hormonal acne treatments. If you smoke, or have other health issues, you may not be able to either.

Accutane

Accutane has been a very effective acne treatment… before it was removed from the U.S. market. The problems with Accutane are: severe side effects, cost, and the fact that your skin gets worse for some time before it gets better. If you have severe acne, you may end up taking Accutane eventually. It must only be used as a last resort. Liver damage, suicidal thoughts, depression, severe birth defects, extremely dry and irritated skin are some of the potential side effects. The list is actually very long and you must be supervised by a doctor and undergo frequent blood tests while you are on this medication. What people might not tell you is that Accutane does not work overnight. In fact, your skin will be much worse, for up to a year, before it finally clears up. Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if that’s okay. It probably isn’t if you are in college or just starting a new job. On the other hand, if you have very severe acne that doesn’t respond to other treatments, Accutane should be considered. Again, only as a last resort. I would certainly try Acne No More first, to see if Accutane could be avoided. Click the link to read my Acne No More Review .
